Meet Sister Anne Locke

Living Life with a “Can-Do” Spirit and a Heart for God

“First, I wanted to be a doctor to cure the world, then a nurse to help the world,” shares Sr. Anne Locke.  But after much prayer she found a different way to help people. She responded to God’s call to become a Sister of Notre Dame.

As a young teacher she served in schools in San Jose, Chico, Santa Clara and San Francisco–filling in where needed.  Later when completing her degree in chemistry and biology at College of Notre Dame, Sr. Anne had her most unusual job assignment: raising lab rats.

During the challenging late ’60s, Sr. Anne taught science and served as dean of students at Notre Dame High School, San Jose. Life had its lighter moments too when she had the chance to shoot hoops with the famed Harlem Globetrotters who performed at the school.

In 1982 she entered a new phase in her life as she went to work for Catholic Charities in San Jose. While she had many positions during her 20 years there, she particularly enjoyed helping young schizophrenic adults find jobs. With a can-do spirit she started a landscaping business to employ the men and later got a contract with Hewlett Packard to have her crew handle a variety of on-campus tasks.  Boss and friend Eila Latif shares “It was a daily pleasure to serve with Sr. Anne. And to this day people still ask about her!”

From 2006-2010 she worked at Cristo Rey High School in Sacramento. As part of the Cristo Rey model she found jobs for the students who spend one day a week at a company gaining business experience. “Two years ago, I took a student to a job interview in a bank. As we waited in wing-back chairs, he smiled at me and said, ‘Sister, I never thought I’d be here with this opportunity.’ “That means the world to me.”

Today Sister volunteers at Maryhouse, a part of Loaves and Fishes Homeless Services in Sacramento, where she works at the dispensary and hosts a knitting group.
