Mercy, Goodness, Service
Cristo Rey High School is a Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory school that serves students from low-income families in the Sacramento area. Opened in September 2006, it is one of the newest schools in the national Cristo Rey High School Network and is sponsored by three religious congregations - the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Auburn Regional Community; the California Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur; and the California Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
In August, 2007, Cristo Rey High School, began its second year with 100 new freshmen and 92 returning sophomores. A unique component of Cristo Rey schools is the Work Study Program. Local businesses hire students who job share with other students to learn professional skills at the same time that they earn much of the costs of their tuition. Sister Anne Locke is responsible for training incoming freshman for entry-level jobs in business, publishing, health care, social services, law and engineering.
"Prompt, prepared, participative, polite, productive and positive." Cristo Rey students have big dreams and those words are their formula for success. Usually the first in their families to aspire to college, every graduate will meet admission requirements for most colleges and universities. The religion, English, mathematics, science, social studies and Spanish classes are challenging, but Sr. Michela Sheehan and Sr. Ann Bernadette Barnes are there to help those who need it. Sr. Claudia McTaggart, Admissions Assistant, guides students and their parents through the application process.
Cristo Rey isn't all work and study as these students find. There are many opportunities to play on a team, star on stage, create something beautiful or just hang out with good friends.
Postscript: On March 6, 2008, the Sacramento Bee newspaper featured the school in an article: "Little south Sacramento school knows how to do more with less."
