What exactly was this young woman applying to the library wall? I moved closer to find that she was patiently applying cement to colorful ceramic tiles on the library wall facing the residence halls.
Fascinating!
Liz Schooler introduced herself and explained how she and Stacey DeNatale had collaborated on a 2007 senior project (directed by Professor of Psychology Gretchen Wehrle) on the Hallmarks of a Notre Dame Learning Community. They had been introduced to the Hallmarks as freshmen and decided as part of their major in Business and Leadership that they would incorporate the Hallmarks as a public art project.
One day they invited students, faculty and staff to paint ceramic tiles with words from the Hallmarks and symbols. Now all the tiles are done and Liz is joyfully creating the mural. And, it is a thing of beauty!
I could not help thinking of a community project of the '60s during the building of Cunningham Chapel. One day the CND community--students, faculty and staff--gathered in the open field to place California stone of several colors in the frame of the Cross on the back wall of the chapel. Like an upside-down cake, the cement wall was then poured and several weeks passed. Then one day the back sanctuary wall was raised, and, happily it was beautiful! To this day students from that time remember just where they put their rocks.
