A Happy Place for Children
Notre Dame Elementary traces its beginnings to the Sisters' first California school opened in San Jose in 1851 with their first student, little Johnny Townsend. The school moved to Belmont in 1923 where, today, Johnny would be amazed at all the activities and tools that help the children learn.
From crayons, books and computers, to individualized, small group and whole class activities, students discover that learning is fun. Sr. Catherine Davis, librarian, helps them with research, reads stories to the littlest ones, and can always find just the right book for a child to check out and enjoy. Whenever a student needs a bit of extra help, one of the many Sister volunteers is there to provide it.
Not all learning happens in the classroom. Community service is a long-time tradition at Notre Dame Elementary. You'll find 8th graders serving at St. Vincent de Paul's kitchen, 7th graders visiting the elderly at an adult day care center and younger children fundraising and decorating lunch bags for the homeless.
Of course, the real value in any school is the people. For the last 32 years until May 2007, Sr. Dolores Quigg served as principal. These were years of service and innovation, of instilling Notre Dame's timeless values in students and families, and meeting their changing needs. Today, Principal Noreen Browning, along with the teachers, Sisters, staff and parents, continues that tradition.
