Actor Martin Sheen Identifies with Sister  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Actor Martin Sheen identifies with Sr. Dorothy Stang, our Sister who was assassinated in Brazil in 2005. They both grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and both were educated by Sisters of Notre Dame.

We learned this at the fundraiser luncheon held recently to benefit the NDNU Dorothy Stang Center for Social Justice and Community Engagement. Sheen is known for his impressive career as an actor. What is not so well known is his passion for justice (another similarity with Sr. Dorothy), proven many times over by his participation in marches and vigils for justice causes and his nearly 70 arrests in the process.

Our Sisters who live at the Province Center had an opportunity to experience his warmth, accessibility and humor when he stopped in after the luncheon. Sheen regaled us with reminiscences from Dayton school days and the Sisters who taught him.

Patricia Curran writes: How I miss West Wing! But I think Sheen modeled the kind of president the people want and that helped prepare the way for Obama.

Cindy Vrooman writes: Next time you have a famous movie star visiting Belmont do give me a heads up. Wow, am I jealous. What a wonderful treat. I am a big fan of Martin Sheen! My husband and I saw the film on Dorothy at Dominincan University in San Rafael. Very powerful and difficult to watch. The director was present answering questions. I was hoping to see Martin Sheen at that event. Oh, well, I am glad some of my friends had a chance to shake his hand. Take care! Cindy
