Sr. Angela Julie Gutierrez

After 73 years as a Sister of Notre Dame, Sr. Angela Julie Gutierrez, died at the end of December 2008. She had been a talented and creative math teacher at Notre Dame high schools in Marysville, Watsonville, Salinas and San Jose. In her recent years in Millbrae, she was often asked to guide other retired people in prayer and to reflect on life together in their challenging "golden years." Sisters, family and friends celebrated Sr. Angela's life at the Province Center in Belmont and at St. Dunstan Church in Millbrae.

Sr. Julie Clayton

Loving life in Alaska.
Loving life in Alaska.
Small in stature but big in heart, always with a smile, Sr. Julie taught elementary school in California and Washington, making good friends everywhere she went. Everyone knew, however, that her favorite memory was serving in Alaska.  When poor health brought her back to California, she stayed in touch and sent packages of supplies to people she knew in Alaska.  When Sr. Julie died at Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland on October 3, 2007, the Director arranged for mariachis to celebrate her loving presence there.

Sr. Mary McCarthy

Sr. Mary (Mary Elizabeth), a lively and engaging French and English teacher, taught in Notre Dame Schools in California, inlcuding 20 years at Notre Dame High School in Alameda.

She then served another 20 years at St. Mary's Hospital Pain Clinic in San Francisco. As someone who suffered from polio as a child and from severe back pain later, she provided compassionate and empathetic support to many patients. Sr. Mary was a well loved resident of the Province Center community in Belmont until her death on August 6, 2007, following a stroke.
