The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are involved in issues of justice and peace because of

  • Jesus' concern for others and his healing ways,
  • the social teachings of the Catholic Church,
  • our Congregational tradition and the voices of the poor.


Corporate stances taken by California SNDs and Associates:

2004: in favor of the Earth Charter (followed by study of water as a renewable resource) - an international initiative to establish a sound, ethical and sustainable foundation for emerging global society.

2003: vs. war in Iraq

2000: vs. death penalty

1999: in support for debt cancellation for countries so burdened by excessive and often unjust debt that they cannot become stable and productive members of the world community able to provide for their own citizens.

Nation corporate stances taken by SNDs in the United States:

2010: Stance on anti-trafficking

1997: in favor of banning landmines 

1995: vs. the passage and implementation of unjust laws for immigrants


How do SNDs get involved?
  1. We make thoughtful preparation based on gospel reflection, critical social analysis of root causes and stories of improverished people.
  2. We decide appropriate action.
  3. We take action.
