Sister Julie Carmel Mingoia proudly reminds us that she taught elementary school for 62 years.  Beginning in Marysville in 1942, she later taught children from Covina, California to Portland, Oregon. She served for 30 years at Madonna del Sasso School in Salinas where she gracefully moved from teaching fifth grade to serving as librarian and a teacher's aide. "The time's gone by so quickly," she says shaking her head in amazement.

"She was a great teacher, librarian, computer instructor, art teacher, and teacher's assistant, but even more," remembers her friend and former principal, Sr. Barbara Matasci. "She cared for the school and parish community and, whether at daily Mass, after school, or some special parish event, Sr. Julie Carmel was always there to help people feel welcomed and at home. Every day, she walked to visit and pray with parishioners. She made many, many friends."

Sister moved to the Province Center in Belmont in 2003 and continued her cheerful habit of walking and making friends. She moved to Mercy Retirement & Care Center in Oakland this year and her Belmont neighbors still miss her!  But true to her nature, she is making new friends in Oakland and always has a smile on her face and prayers for those she meets.
