Photo and text by Sr. Jon Julie Sullivan, SND
Just around the bend is
how each new day begins.
In many ways we are simply on a path
Cleared and opened by those who are ahead.
What grace there is in appreciating them
And hoping someone knows how we were
Part of the road makers once upon a time.
Even when the buildings have closed
There is still evidence of paths
We have made in one another's hearts.
We are not alone.

Lent, early spring -
a time for quiet growth.
It's time to pay attention to small things -
grasses along the path
a carpet of miner's lettuce between road and creek
seven deer resting in the shade of redwoods
ferns growing in the rock wall at the side of the road
and a tiny waterfall flowing from the rock.
