Sister Lois Hagerty (1931-2012)

Sister Lois (Anthony Julie) Hagerty, a Sister of Notre Dame for 63 years, died on November 29, 2012 in Oakland, California.

Born in San Francisco to parents Emmett and Marcella Murphy Hagerty, Lois entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1949, after graduating from Notre Dame High School, San Francisco.

A caring elementary school educator for 20 years, Sr. Lois taught in Notre Dame schools including St. Dunstan, Millbrae and Notre Dame Elementary, San Francisco. Parish ministry, especially working with the sick and elderly, was a perfect match for her kindness, her strong faith, and her desire to help others. She loved the communities she worked with in the Sacramento Diocese at St. John Church in Folsom, St. Anthony Church in Winters, and Divine Savior Parish in Orangevale.  A parishioner and friend wrote that Sr. Lois was “the face of Christ to so many people.”

Sr. Lois spent the last years of her life at Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland.  She is lovingly remembered by her brother and sister-in-law, Anthony & Lucy Hagerty, her sister, Marcie Dugan, many nieces and nephews, good friends Patti and Tom Midtlyng, former colleagues and students, and her community, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

Contributions in memory of Sr. Lois Hagerty may be made to Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 1520 Ralston Avenue, Belmont, CA 94002 or online.
