Lord, we thank you for the life of Sr. Dorothy Stang who models for us the growth in faith that exemplifies profound holiness.
Beginning with her desire to serve the poor in foreign lands, Dorothy grew from a helpful young girl into a brave and courageous woman who suffered from tropical diseases, lived in primitive conditions, and faced the terror of death threats.
We need people like Dorothy to encourage us to give of ourselves when it is hard to do so. She walked hundreds of miles to reach the poor and forsaken. She ate a meager peasant diet. She wept when she saw the trees being illegally cut down and heard the cry of the monkeys whose habitats were being destroyed.
She believed that God was with her. She prayed each day for the grace to continue to walk with the poor.
Lord, increase our faith. Give us the courage to reach out to others in compassion and love as Dorothy did in her life.
