Giving Tuesday Nicaragua School Update

Thanks to all who donated on #GivingTuesday, we raised almost $34,000 to help build much-needed primary and pre-schools in Nicaragua. We hope you enjoy reading the latest news about the project from Sr. Sandy Price, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur who has served in Nicaragua for more than 30 years.

WOW! What a wonderful surprise. Thank you to everyone who gave on Giving Tuesday!

We are thrilled that we should be able to build 8 schools this year and just at the right time since we are heading into the dry season when it is easiest to get materials into the mountain communities. We have already started the first school, a preschool at the LaSalle school in the town of Santa Rita about 30km from the center and where one of the Misionera Sisters with whom I live, is the directress. It is along the main road from Mulukukú to Siuna and serves families from the town. They have a Saturday high school program for students from nearby communities as well as a primary school grades 1 to 6.

A second school is beginning next week at a community deep in the mountains. We are beginning with the preschool there, then the primary school and then will assess if we have funds to do three rooms for the high school.  At the moment there is only one classroom for the five-year-program so classes have to be held in the grade school. One group meets under a tree and another in a kitchen.

Now the challenge is to find master carpenters to direct the work. I want to start as many schools as possible all at the same time in order to take advantage of the dry season and our “summer vacation time” which is December to February.

Many thanks to all involved. I’ll send photos showing the building progress as soon as I can.
