Last evening we celebrated a Peace Vigil Mass in Yambio town. Today we had no classes so that our students could join the Peace Walk to Freedom Square to join the throngs gathered there to pray for peace for our state of Western Equatoria and for the country of South Sudan. Four Christian Bishops, the Imam, and the Catholic Governor of Western Equatoria were present leading the prayers.
The Zande farmers and the visiting Dinka cattlemen are in conflict in a few places in Western Equatoria. The first conflict was in Mundri and then the violence spread to Maridi. In Maridi, the SPLA [Sudan People’s Liberation Army] soldiers took possession of the Catholic priest’s house. That priest was with us at the 6:00 p.m. Mass last night..
Added to these disturbances in Western Equatoria, we learned that two nights ago the SPLA invaded the Catholic Pastoral Center in Juba, where Solidarity also has office space. The SPLA stole the laptop computers, but left the desk tops. The watchman climbed a tree and escaped. Who can say no to the government’s soldiers invading your office???
So, we continue to pray for peace. Thank you for remembering us in your prayer.
